Platoon

“I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves.  The enemy was in us.  The war is over for me now, but it will always be there, the rest of my days.  As I’m sure Elias will be,  fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called “possession of my soul.”  There are times since, I’ve felt like a child, born of those two fathers.

The above is a quote from Chris at the end of the movie Platoon.  I would like you to analyze this quote and also review the movie and tell me what does it mean to you.  Put yourself in the perspective of a war veteran and analyze this also.  I think 500 words is enough.

Federal Debt Assignment
So today we are going to investigate the history and current status of our national debt.  Since government relies heavily on taxes to run, I decided to throw this activity in with our chapter on taxes.

Clicking on the following link to my website will lead you to the assignment.

http://tr008.k12.sd.us/New%20Folder/Government/Financing%20government/federal_budget_and_debt_assignme.htm

Below I have included an updated link that will help you more easily find the information needed for the assignment

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/pd.htm

You will need to use the link to "Historical Debt Outstanding" at some point in the assignment.

When you are done you will end up with 3 graphs and a list of 10 things you did not know.

The Debate: Flat or Progressive

Ok.  So we have been studying taxes and the different types.  A common question that comes up in my classes is why doesn't the United States just have a flat tax.  Of course we don't, we have a progressive tax but it never fails to amaze me that year in and year out that question comes up.  So there are of course many different thoughts and opinions on this but click on the link above and  read the article.  Some people say progressive taxes lead to unemployment.  Others argue that the rich should pay their share or that they should pay more.  I would like to know your stance on this topic and reasoning behind it.  I think over 300 words is enough to convince me of your position on this subject matter.  Please include a quote from the article so I know you read some of it and some details from the article that support your opinion.  Also click the link above that talks about some debatable points of view to help educate yourself further on the topic.  Enjoy.

Trump protests and 1968 election?

So a lot of people are watching Trump and his campaign rally's in earnest because of the protest and turbulence they have been creating.  Yesterday I was reading an article that attempts to analyze the similarities between the protests at Donald Trump's recent rally's to Richard Nixon's 1968 run for President.  The article talks about how the "Black Lives Matter" group and the 1968 riots all had a influential impact on the outcome of the presidential election.

I would like you to read the article, evaluate and list 5 similarities from the 1968 election year and the 2016 election year.  As an alternative you may write a 200 word comparison/contrast on the similarities/contrasts of the 1968 presidential election year and the 2016 election.

History students should also do the questions on page 837 #6-8.

The link below will take you to the article:  Anti-Trump Protests Grow

Watergate

Watergate and recent Presidential scandals
http://tr008.k12.sd.us/New%20Folder/U.S.%20History/Nixon/watergate_fact_finder.htm

Read the essay, “Above the Law” from UVA’s Miller Center.

What do you think of the idea that Nixon’s downfall was due to the fact that he imitated his enemies and put himself above the law?

"His conviction that he was fighting evil became his excuse for doing evil. His attempts to break an imaginary conspiracy ultimately led him to launch the real conspiracy that broke him."

After reading the essay, reflect on the first statement and quote from the essay above.  Respond using details from the essay that demonstrate your support either for or against Nixon creating his own downfall through scandal.
